“The Esor Eillib is a tripedal being with a unique ability to scoot about on a monowheel at high speed. It has a steel horn on the top of its head for defence, so people must never get on the wrong side of Esor Eillib. The creature is your companion and guardian throughout your life, look after Esor Eillib and it shall keep you safe. Its eyes are deep and silver, with the power to see events in your past, present and future and are able to safely guide you. One word of caution, Esor Eillib likes to eat copious amounts of umeboshi plums, so if you have any you must keep them locked up!”

"The Skabbawakka is an ancient spirit being that emanates from the lower depths. They are said to inhabit the heavily forested areas of Shropshire and Mid-Wales where they spend much of their lives living a subterranean existence. Occasionally they make an appearance above ground, but only on a moonless night in order to forage and hunt for food. If you are ever lucky enough to spot a Skabbawakka, as it forages for roots and vegetables or the occasional badger, then you are blessed. You actually have more chance of seeing a UFO than you have of ever spotting this dazzling black and white one-eyed beast. Before you spot one, you shall surely hear it first, as they make a KLA KLA KLA KLA sound which is highly distinctive. The Skabbawakka is said to possess healing magic and if you make eye contact with one then a lifetime of good health, fortune, and joy shall be bestowed upon you."

Version two of the eighth in a series of twenty-one artworks, based on a trip to Nepal in August / September 1996. This version of Terraced Rice Fields Near Bahundanda, was commissioned as a wedding present for the close friend who I undertook this wonderful journey with.

Diary Entry No. 8
Thursday 29th August 1996
Besisahar To Syange

"At long last, we have left Besisahar, we are now staying in a small village called Syange, the village is set in the bottom of a deep river gorge. Rice terraces and pine trees fade out ever upwards into the swirling mist, which today has, fortunately, shielded us from the blazing sun. The house where we are currently spending the night hangs precariously on stilts over the roaring Marsyandi River. I know for a fact that sleeping only a matter of a few meters away from this roaring river is going to make for a restless night’s sleep.

As I write this entry the dal baat is being prepared, I can smell the dal and rice. It is good to be here and away from the searing heat of Besisahar, today’s walk took seven hours and we passed through some spectacular scenery as we followed the meandering river, at times we were following a path some five feet wide and eight hundred feet above the rapids.

As soon as we arrived here, I took my first shower in five days, it was interesting. The shower was a wooden box perched next to the river, the water was bloody freezing, but to the rescue came a knock at the door and placed before me was a huge bowl of piping hot water, it was heaven!

Today we have had to have porters as Craig’s feet show no sign of healing, I think that he has picked up a rather nasty fungal infection, I have not seen anything like it before. We also have to make serious headway after losing five days in Besisahar due to bad feet and stomach upsets. The heat and humidity in the lowlands have also hampered our efforts for several days but with the extra help carrying the kit we should now make some gains."

Kathmandu To Pokhara

"We caught the bus this morning from Kathmandu to Pokhara, a seven-hour journey through some of Nepal’s beautiful lush green terraced rice fields. It was grey and overcast, I’m concerned about the time of year that we are going to do this trek as the monsoon is upon us.

Looking out of the guest house window towards where the Annapurna mountains should be, all I see is 30,000ft of towering black clouds. Arriving in Pokhara was a strange experience, we were dropped off about four kilometres outside the town centre and to meet only eight people on our bus were fifty or sixty Nepalese taxi drivers. They were all waiting in a huge line and blocking the way from the Bus Park to the main road. I can’t believe how it felt to have sixty grown men literally grovelling at my feet, grabbing hold of me, calling me ‘Sir!’ ‘Sir I take you to good hotel, very cheap!’

We decided that we would walk into town after previous experiences on this trip of taking up free taxi rides to hotels. The walk was hard in this heat; four kilometres and most of the men followed us for half this distance. We’re now staying at the Kiwi Guesthouse, not a bad place, good food and it’s eight US dollars a night. Tomorrow we wake up at 5:30 am for our 6:00 am bus to Dumre, which is twenty-five kilometres from here."

Jomsom To Pokhara

"Nima cooked a brilliant breakfast this morning, porridge and coffee, the porridge-tasted good made with yak’s cream. It’s pretty good when you know the chef! I figure he’d struck up a deal with the lodge owner. If he cooks the food and cleans up etc. then he gets free lodgings. Woofers has disappeared this morning, maybe he’s back on the trail again looking for some other travellers to feed and look after him, it was a shame he disappeared so soon as we wanted to buy him breakfast and say goodbye.

We made it to the airfield at 6:00 am for our 7:30 am flight to Pokhara. The first plane came in at 7:30 am and was forced to turn back one mile from the airfield because of the poor visibility. An hour and a half later a yellow and blue Russian army helicopter came in, piloted by three big fat Russian guys, they all resembled Soviet hard-line leaders. E.g. Brezhnev. The Nepalese do not know how to queue, we had to hold our line as behind us was a maddening crowd of people with goats, chickens and screaming babies, which added to the already tense atmosphere.

People were pushing and shoving us with dirty sacks of rice and other produce. The two drunks who had tried to throw Woofers off of a cliff near Muktinath were also on our flight, Domenic gave them some verbal though I doubt they understood him. The luggage was strapped down the centre of the helicopter, the benches which we sat on faced inwards with little round portholes to our backs, the machine shook and the noise was incredible although the take-off was surprisingly smooth. The flight lasted half an hour, we did not see much of a view, a few snow-capped peaks and lush green valley’s, I thought of Bob and Nima who were down below in the valley for four more days, as they were walking back to Pokhara.

Pokhara was surprisingly bigger than I remembered, we came in and circled the town and I could feel the humid warm air coming in through every gap in the helicopter, I could tell I was back as I started to sweat. Craig, Domenic and I caught a taxi from the airfield to Lakeside, we’re now staying at the Butterfly Lodge, it is very clean and five US dollars a night, we have carpets, hot showers and a laundry service. Tonight I have to retire early, as today was exhausting, tomorrow we board the nightmare bus at 7:00 am for Kathmandu."

I have not had the pleasure of producing artwork for Nottingham's LeftLion Magazine, not since the A Canadian In New Basford column was resurrected for the 100th edition back in March 2018. Jared Wilson (Editor-in-chief) asked if I could come up with a visual concept for the Christmas 2020 front cover, allowing me pretty much a free rein. The year 2020 in many respects was an 'Annus Horribilis', the political noise emanating from the Oval Office, which should represent the voice of freedom and democracy, was nothing more than a surreal and frightening charade. Fake news, sensationalism and the repeated warping of political reality had become the new norm. Despite losing the election to president-elect Joe Biden in November, I can't help but feel that something terrible and surreal is going to happen, is it possible that we could see a coup d'état in Washington D.C? The Trump presidency has shown us that the old rule book has been torn up and thrown out of the window and that anything is possible.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also raged across the globe this year, it's changed life as we knew it. The artwork is intended to shine an optimistic light on the year to come, hopefully Donald Trump slides out of office peacefully and gradually the vaccination programme is expanded and we can once again begin to socialise, see friends and family and travel freely. In reality I wouldn't want to see Donald Trump decapitated and his head on a plate, but hopefully this image is symbolic of the fact that for him, the party is over and he's going to be consigned, along with Covid-19, to the history books.

A Canadian In New Basford was my bimonthly slot, where I was teamed up with talented Canadian writer Rob Cutforth. His prose had the distinct knack of bringing out the best in my visual interpretations; I would read his piece, while drinking a cup of tea or coffee and invariably end up choking several paragraphs in, thus showering my screen and keypad. We haven't had the opportunity to work together for quite some time, not since Rob moved from Nottingham to Manchester, but the column has been resurrected with the 100th edition of LeftLion Magazine being published in late March 2018.

Here you can download and read the A Canadian In New Basford article, as published in the 100th edition of LeftLion.

Finally a big thanks to everyone at LeftLion Magazine in Nottingham, for bringing the beast back to life for the 100th edition!
